Man charged with stealing, accused of switching price tags on items at a Camden County Walmart

Camden County deputies arrested William Brown after officers responded to reports of a shoplifter at a local Walmart.

According to the probable cause statement, an asset protection associate at the store observed Brown swapping price tags on items and purchasing them for the swapped price at the register.

The associate told police Brown paid for two toilet bowl plungers and a cat bowl, but the items in his cart were a 19-inch flat screen TV, a jump-start power pack for vehicle batteries and a bottle of shampoo.

Police said surveillance footage also showed Brown trying to take off an anti-theft device from a Bluetooth speaker.

The associate told police that employees tried to stop Brown, but he left the store and got into a GMC Acadia.

Police said officers pulled over the car and saw Brown get out of the vehicle with some dollar bills and a pocket knife.

According to the probable cause statement, Brown told police that he had not stolen anything from Walmart and that he had offered to pay for the price mistaken items.

Police said Brown had a warrant out Texas with full US extradition for probation violation on felony domestic assault.

Officers said they searched his vehicle and found a gun, knife, multiple hypodermic syringes, a digital scale a small amount of methamphetamine on a spoon.

Brown was arrested and transported to the Camden County Jail. When he arrived, officers searched his person and said they found a drivers license belonging to a Michael Brown, as well as two Social Security cards not belonging to Brown.

Brown has been charged with possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and stealing.
