Man sentenced to 5 years in prison for endangering the welfare of a child, giving minor alcohol

A man pleaded guilty to felony endangering the welfare of a child on Monday and received five years in prison.

Joshua Coates admitted to giving a teenager alcohol. Prosecutor Tracy Gonzalez said this plea deal was a discussion among the victims and families, and they agreed it was the best course of action.

This stems back in an investigation in 2016.

ABC 17 previously reported that in the summer of 2015, Coates and the victim were at Motel 6 in Columbia, where Coates allegedly raped the victim.

The victim told Boone County Deputies she did not remember having sex with Coates, but a witness at the Motel 6 told her that Coates raped her while she was drunk and passed out.

Coates remains charged with first-degree child molestation for a 2016 incident
