UPDATE: One dies in Highway 54 crash, bypass reopens after 4 hours of being closed

UPDATE 2:15 pm: The Mexico Public Safety Department said they responded to the crash after multiple callers reported that a car and a dump truck had collided and both vehicles were on fire.

Police said responding officers were able to contain the fire and extinguish it.

Officers said the investigation revealed that Domonique Powell, 27, was proceeding westbound on the Highway 54 bypass when his Ford crossed the centerline and struck a dump truck that was driving in the eastbound lane of traffic.

Jason Nelson, 46, the dump truck driver was able to escape the vehicle before it caught on fire, police said.

Officers said Powell died on scene.

The bypass was closed for four hours and reduced to one lane of traffic for an additional hour and a half.

ORIGINAL STORY: A portion of Highway 54 is closed in Mexico Missouri after a crash Monday morning.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol told ABC 17 News it has been called in to assist with traffic.

According to troopers, another agency is facilitating the emergency response for the crash and could not confirm any further details.
