Former sheriff’s deputy sentenced to death after 2011 double murder

A former prison officer and Dent County Sheriff’s Deputy that killed two and led authorities on a multi-county chase through mid-Missouri was sentenced to death on Friday. It was a sentence nearly six years in the making.

In December 2011, ABC 17 News was on the scene in Jefferson City when Marvin Rice was captured by officers at the Capitol Plaza Hotel after a shootout with officer Curt Bohanan II and Det. Chris Suchanek with the Cole County Sheriff’s Office.

Earlier, Rice had shot and killed his ex-girlfriend, Annette Durham, and Durham’s boyfriend, Steve Strotkamp during a custody fight over Durham and Rice’s son in Dent County.

Both Durham’s six-year-old daughter and the two-year-old son she shared with Rice were hiding in a nearby room. Rice took his son and left him with family before heading to Jefferson City.

A chase along Highway 50/63 reached speeds of 100 miles per hour before Rice left his vehicle, entered the hotel, and began a firefight with officers. Rice was shot during the ordeal and hospitalized.

Nearly six years later, in August, Rice was sentenced to life in prison for Strotkamp’s slaying.

On Friday, Judge Kelly Wayne Parker sentenced him to death for Durham’s murder.
