UPDATE: Man shot, killed by JCPD had violent history, police say

UPDATE – 8:45 a.m.: Jefferson City police released more details about the officer-involved shooting death of a 40-year-old man.

According to the department, the suspect asked officers if they wanted to die during the confrontation.

“Officers were forced to retreat, and the suspect began to barricade a stairwell to prohibit officers from returning,” said JCPD Capt. Doug Shoemaker.” “Additionally, the suspect broke out a number of windows with a metal pipe, telling officers to shoot him.”

Police said the suspect then ran out of the house and charged at the officers, causing them to retreat out of the building and into the street.

They said the suspect continued to approach the officers, armed with the pipe.

At that point, police say, two officers shot and injured the suspect, injuries that later proved fatal.

“While we are deeply saddened at the loss of life in this instance, our officers have had numerous calls involving the suspect, many of which revolve around serious threats toward police,” Shoemaker said. “As recently as June of this year, officers responded to a similar domestic dispute involving the same suspect wielding a knife and baseball bat and charging officers, threatening to shoot them if they return near his property.”

According to the police report, the victim had visible injuries, having been been assaulted by the suspect “at least 45 times” in the past.

The June incident ended when the suspect was arrested for felony charges of domestic violence, resisting arrest, and unlawful use of a weapon.

The suspect was also currently wanted on contempt of court charges, with a caution on the warrant for his violent tendencies.

ABC 17 News reported on a case in early June that involved a man charging at Jefferson City police officers with a knife and a bat.

Police will not confirm if the suspect in that case is the same as the one involved in Tuesday morning’s shooting.

The department said it has not yet notified the family of the suspect.

The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave as the investigation is underway by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control.

The officers have served in the JCPD for 8 years and 3 years respectively.

UPDATE – 5:45 a.m.: ABC 17 News has spoken with Jefferson City police about the shooting. So far, they are releasing few details until they are able to compile the reports and factual information.

“We’re four hours into this, so we want to make sure we take every possible detail and look at it and look at it again and release only facts not speculation,” Capt. Doug Shoemaker said.

Shoemaker said a woman called 911 after another woman, unknown to her, “was asking for immediate police help and alluded it was in response to a domestic violence call.”

Shoemaker said they’re not aware of the extent of the relationship between the man and woman involved in the domestic dispute.

Shoemaker said when they got on scene, they made contact with a man believed to be connected to the disturbance call.

“During contact with the male suspect, there were several threats made toward the officers,” Shoemaker said. “During the confrontation, officers discharged the firearms, striking the male suspect.”

The identity of the man has not been released, pending notification of family.

Shoemaker didn’t say how long officers were on scene before the shooting or if the man had any weapons in his hands.

“We want to ensure all the reports are in and we release facts not speculation,” Shoemaker said. “We’ve already seen some of that on social media in terms of speculation and that’s unfortunate. We have a loss of life. We take this very seriously.”

More information is expected to be released throughout the day.

UPDATE – 3:45 a.m.: The Jefferson City Police Department responded just after midnight Tuesday morning to the 300 block of East Dunklin Street.

Officers said a caller reported a domestic disturbance in which a woman was asking for the police to be called because of threats of violence.

According to the police report, officers were investigating when they were confronted by a 40-year-old suspect they believed was involved in the disturbance.

Officers shot and injured the man during the confrontation. Officers called Cole County EMS to treat the suspect.

The 40-year-old white man was pronounced dead at an area hospital and his name has not yet been released.

“Our agency has contacted the Missouri State Highway Patrol to request an investigation into the shooting, and we are cooperating with every aspect of that investigation,” said JCPD Capt. Doug Shoemaker. “Additionally, we have just begun our own internal investigation into the shooting per department policy.”

ABC 17 News has a crew headed to the scene and will update this article as new information is confirmed.

ORIGINAL: The Missouri State Highway Patrol is working in Jefferson City Tuesday morning after an overnight shooting that involved a police officer.

According to a social media post by the Jefferson City Police Department, the Division of Drug and Crime Control is involved in the incident.
