CPD arrests man accused of swinging ax at victim

Columbia police officers responded to a reported assault just before 1 a.m. Saturday.

The call came from the 3500 block of I-70 Drive Southeast at ABC Chinese Cuisine Restaurant.

Police say they discovered the victim was in “an intimate relationship” with the suspect, Melvin Pinkett.

The victim told police she went to Pinkett’s house after going to a party to talk with him.

The victim also told police that, “Pinkett became upset, picked up an ax and started swinging it at her approximately four to five times.”

Pinkett was arrested just before 2:30 a.m. in the nearby 3900 block of I-70 Drive Southeast for fourth-degree domestic assault and unlawful use of a weapon.
