Troopers warn drivers of new law during harvest season

Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers are wanting to make drivers aware of a new law that will be implemented during harvest season.

On Friday, troopers sent out a notice alerting drivers that with the passage of Senate Bill 8, agricultural implements will be allowed to be moved on Missouri roadways for short distances during periods of darkness, only if they are equipped with the proper lighting.

Troopers say agricultural implements operated during the times when lighted lamps are required should be exhibiting a white light visible from a distance of 500 feet to the front of the vehicle.

The sides of the vehicle should be shown by the lamp lights.

“Slow moving vehicle” emblems are required.

Commanding officer of Troop B, Capt. James Wilt, says the change will allow farmers to safely and efficiently harvest their crops.

Troopers ask motorists to stay alert for slow-moving farm equipment and oversize loads when traveling in farming areas. They also ask for drivers to be patient behind the slow-moving vehicles and to only pass when the driver’s view of the road is not obstructed.

Troopers ask farmers to make sure they have their required lights and signs on the vehicles at all times.
