First week of meteorological fall living up to its name
Mid-Missourians certainly have been in for a treat when stepping outside. Temperatures for the most part have been the coolest they’ve been in months. This trend is all thanks to a strong cold front that tracked through Mid-Missouri Monday.
Upper level winds continue to bring in cooler and drier air from parts of Canada, which is keeping the pleasant conditions in place across the region. While it certainly is feeling like fall here, the official start to the season doesn’t arrive until Friday, September 22.
It’s then when we can expect to see the changing leaves, as trees begin to shut down the food production process. Crisp mornings can be expected over the coming months as the seasons of summer and fall battle out.
Looking ahead, the below average temperatures is likely to continue. This will likely keep September as a whole, as the second month in a row with cooler than normal temperatures.
It certainly is a trend that is reminding us that summer is quickly nearing the end of its reign.
As temperatures continue to fall and the fall season quickly approaches, here’s some interesting tidbits about the season.
– Leaves change color because trees stop food production, therefore not allowing enough chlorophyll to be produced.
– The Autumnal Equinox is named for the equal day and night that is nearly 12 hours long across the globe.
– A study published in the Journal of Aging showed that people born during the fall months live longer.
– The end of daylight savings time is actually good for us according to a report from the New England Journal of Medicine.
– While we enjoy all seasons, places like Puerto Rico or near the equator see mild temperatures in the 75 to 85 degree range.
