UPDATE: Police investigating shooting in central Columbia

UPDATE 1:15 p.m: Police confirm gunshots were fired in the 1200 block of Grand Avenue around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said when officers arrived at the area, they found 14 bullet casings.

They said after a preliminary investigation, they know a male pedestrian began shooting from an alleyway at a vehicle that was driving down Grand Avenue.

A person inside the vehicle then started shooting back at the pedestrian before fleeing south on Grand Avenue, police said.

Police said the pedestrian suspect also fled the area.

Police brought a K-9 unit to track the suspects, but they were unable to find them.

No injuries or property damage were reported as a result of the incident.

The Moberly Area Community College was notified of the shooting and went on lockdown.

Police said the pedestrian involved is a younger black man, about 6 feet tall, with a thin build. He was last seen wearing white pants and a dark-colored sweatshirt.

Police said the vehicle involved was white.

If anyone has any information regarding the incident, they are asked to contact the Columbia Police Department, or to remain anonymous, to call CrimeStoppers.

ORIGINAL: ABC 17 News is working to find out why police are on the scene in central Columbia. Officers were seen putting down evidence markers near Grand Avenue and Sexton Road.

Hickman High School and Ridgeway Elementary were put on modified lockdown, which means students are not allowed outside. ABC 17 News also confirmed the Moberly Area Community College campus on the Business Loop was temporarily locked down. MACC sent a text alert telling everyone to avoid the area until it lifted shortly.

It is unclear what happened and what evidence was found.
