ORIGINAL STORY: A woman was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries Friday afternoon after a shooting in the 1700 block of Stanford Drive in west Columbia, according to police.

Columbia Police spokesperson Bryana Larimer said officers received reports of a gunshot wound victim around 12:05 p.m., prompting nearby Russell Boulevard Elementary into lockdown.

The suspect had fled the scene before police arrive. Larimer said it appears the victim and suspect knew each other. Larimer could not confirm whether the shooting happened inside or outside the home on Stanford.

ABC 17 News spoke to a neighbor who said he saw the women running up the street screaming she had been shot. He said he helped her inside the home he was doing contract work on next door and called 911.

Officers set up a perimeter in the neighborhood and brought in the K9 unit to try to track down the suspect, but was unsuccessful.

Officers are now looking for the suspect in other parts of the city where they believe he may be.

“At this time we definitely encourage anyone that sees suspicious activity or people in their neighborhood to contact law enforcement immediately,” Larimer said. “That information will then be directed to the detectives and officers that are currently investigating this circumstance.”

Police said the suspect is described as a black male, approximately 6 foot tall with a heavy build and short hair. He was last seen wearing a red shirt and light colored pants or shorts.
