Storms Friday night, possibly severe

Storms are expected to move through parts of Mid-Missouri Friday evening as a weak cold front moves through. After 3 PM, storms will develop in southern Iowa to southeast Nebraska and track to the south-southeast, reaching Pettis, Saline and Chariton counties 8-9 PM. These will head to the southeast, moving out of Mid-Missouri by 3 AM.

Although storms will be spotty and many areas will be missed by the storms, a few could be strong to severe. Latest forecast data shows moderate instability and wind shear west of HWY 63 as the storms move in which could lead to strengthening. The main threats are strong, damaging wind up to 60 mph and large hail up to the size of quarters.

While stronger storms will produce heavy rain, the quick movement and spotty nature of the storms will keep rainfall amounts under a half inch and flooding is unlikely. Highest rainfall amounts are expected near HWY 65 in western Missouri while areas east of HWY 63 will see a tenth inch or less.
