Law enforcement asks drivers not to stop or park on interstate during eclipse
Several law enforcement agencies are warning drivers against spending too much time on the roads in the next week as thousands of visitors pour in to watch the total solar eclipse.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said to avoid the heaviest traffic, people should leave early and remain in their viewing location until a while after the eclipse happens to avoid traffic congestion.
It also released the following safe driving tips:
Don’t stop along the interstate or park on the shoulder Find a safe location to view the event and get there early. Don’t take photographs while driving. Turn headlights on. Prepare for extra congestion, especially on the interstates, on the days leading up to and after the eclipse. Watch out for extra pedestrian traffic on smaller roads. People may randomly park there or walk alongside them in the hour before the total eclipse. Avoid travel during the eclipse or in the area of the path of totality. Never wear eclipse glasses while driving or operating a boat. Bring snacks and water in your car and make sure it has a full tank of gas
“I think common sense, patience and a little bit of courtesy are really going to go a long way in keeping everybody safe during the eclipse,” said Sergeant Scott White.
For those who will be on the water during the eclipse, the Highway Patrol said it wants boats to have the proper lighting when it becomes dark.
“Be aware of your surroundings and what hazards exist near your boat leading up to the eclipse so you’re prepared when it occurs,” said the department in a news release.
Swimmers will also be hard to see as the eclipse occurs.
Callaway County Sheriff Clay Chism said his department will have extra patrols but they won’t be focused on traffic enforcement. Instead, they’ll be working security at certain eclipse events. Chism said Millersburg is having a big event and so is north Jefferson City, which is in the Callaway County limits.
“When there’s that bigger number of people in a certain area we’re going to provide some extra patrols and security details in those areas that way we make sure we have deputies close if they’re called upon,” he said.
