UPDATE: Pickup truck fire prompts rescue, arrest, investigation

UPDATE – 8:20 a.m.: Columbia police have identified the person involved in the Dorsey Street incident as Michael F. Cali.

Officers said they arrived to find a pickup truck engulfed in flames.

Witnesses told police Cali was slumped over in the driver’s seat with his foot on the gas pedal while the truck was in park.

Police said the witness pulled Cali to safety, preventing any injuries.

The building was not damaged and Cali was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

ORIGINAL: Columbia fire crews and police responded Tuesday morning to the 100 block of Dorsey Street near the Stephens College Campus for a vehicle fire.

The pickup was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived just after 3 a.m. and crews say, while the nearby building was evacuated, no one was injured.

A Columbia Fire Department official told ABC 17 News one person was taken into custody and the investigation by the fire marshal’s office continues.

This comes just shortly after another vehicle fire in Columbia resulted in one death.

ABC 17 News will work to get information on who was arrested, how the fire started and any possible charges that may be filed in relation to this investigation.
