Excused absences approved for CPS students who stay home for eclipse

Columbia Public Schools told parents in a letter if they choose to keep their children home the day of the eclipse, it will be considered an excused absence.

CPS said although they have a day full of activities planned for students, they understand this once-in-a-lifetime event.

District spokesperson Michelle Baumstark said, “We are not encouraging students to be absent. We have a wonderful day of learning and activities planned, including viewing the eclipse. It’s a historic opportunity for our students to learn about this once-in-a-lifetime event. It is always a parent’s prerogative to keep his or her child home for illness, concerns about weather, etc. This is no different. We excuse those types of absences.”

The district said they don’t have any fear of losing any funding from the state.

In 10 days, Columbia and surrounding cities will be able to see a total solar eclipse, the path where the moon completely covers the sun from Oregon to South Carolina.

Columbia Public Schools said preparations began more than a year ago, so they feel ready.

CPS Science Coordinator Mike Szydlowski told ABC 17 News from an educational standpoint they believed having school in session during the eclipse was a good decision.

“From an educational standpoint we know that because a lot of parents do have work that day, these kids would be home alone, and a lot of them might not have the right methods,” Szydlowski said.

According to Szydlowski, the district will hold an “eclipse drill” similar to a fire drill to teach students how to use eclipse glasses properly.

ABC 17 News was told all the schools will have locations to view the eclipse except Grant Elementary School. Those students will be bused to West Middle School’s field.
