Your Voice, Your Vote 2017: Aug. 8 Elections

On Aug. 8, Missouri voters will head to the polls to decide a number of local issues.

Below is a breakdown of the items for which mid-Missouri citizens will cast ballots Tuesday.

Missouri House District 50 Representative:

Democrat Michaela Skelton and Republican Sara Walsh are looking to fill Missouri’s 50th District House seat once held by Caleb Jones.

This race will appear on the Boone, Cole, Cooper and Moniteau county ballots.

Proposition 1 (Boone County):

This ballot issue asked voters to extend the life of a half-cent, county-wide sales tax, “for the sole purpose of improving and maintaining roads, bridges and right-of-ways; reducing county property taxes levied for road purposes; and distributing revenues from the county road and bridge fund to cities and to the special road district above the amount required by law.”

The authorization would expire in September 2028.

Special School Levy Election (North Callaway R-I School District):

If passed, this issue would increase the operating tax levy ceiling by .75 percent, “in order to provide additional funds to better maintain its facilities, to hire and retain qualified staff, and meet other operating needs of the District.”

This issue will appear on the Callaway, Boone and Audrain county ballots.

Question 1 (Osage County):

Voters are asked whether or not to continue to the Capital Improvement Sales Tax another ten years.

The current tax, which pays for infrastructure improvements and building maintenance, will expire at the end of 2017.

State Senate District 28 (Benton, Pettis Counties):

Republican Sandy Crawford and Democratic Albert Skalicky are looking to fill the seat vacated by Mike Parson who was elected as Missouri’s lieutenant governor in 2016.

Proposition 1 (Centralia R-VI School District):

If passed, this measure would “increase the operating tax levy ceiling of the District by $0.60 per $100 of assessed valuation for the purpose of paying operating costs of the District.”

Russellville Property Tax (Cole County):

Voters will be asked to “continue the local sales tax for on the titling of motor vehicles, trailers, boats, and outboard motors that were purchased from a source other than a licensed Missouri dealer.”

Tipton Question 1 (Moniteau County):

If passed, this measure would “impose a local use tax at the same rate as the local sales tax, currently at a rate of one percent.”

The measure includes a provision that this tax would be repealed if any changes to the local sales tax is approved by voters.

Tipton Question 2 (Moniteau County):

This measure proposes a quarter-cent property tax for “the establishment and maintenance of a public library in the City of Tipton, Missouri.”
