Severe storms possible this evening
Wednesday night a cold front will begin to approach mid-Missouri. Ahead of this front, severe storms will begin to track into the area through the overnight hours. Storms will begin to develop in northern Missouri early this evening, approaching northwest mid-Missouri by the late evening hours.
Scattered storms are possible during the afternoon to early evening, but latest models are showing a more defined line of storms to arrive around 10 PM – 12 AM. This is when we can expect the strongest line of storms here in mid-Mo.
As this system slowly tracks to the southeast it will weaken, but could still produce heavy rainfall through the night. For the Thursday morning commute storms look more likely for southeast Missouri.
Lingering showers are possible to continue through the afternoon on Thursday. There is a marginal severe threat continued for southeast mid-Missouri through the afternoon, but most areas won’t see severe storms.
Heaviest rainfall totals will be to the north where we can expect anywhere from 1 – 1.5″.
These storms are looking less and less likely to be severe tonight as increased cloud cover Wednesday afternoon has prevented a lot of daytime heating, but there still is a marginal threat in play for northern mid-Missouri. With this marginal threat, the greater risk is damaging wind, but 1″ in diameter hail can’t be ruled out. With plenty of moisture in the atmosphere, heavy downpours from these storms could allow for potential flooding.
