How to stay cool at outdoor events: Colors matter

Several events in mid-Missouri will have more people outside in the heat Saturday.

Heat indices are expected to be in the triple digits. Most of mid-Missouri will be under a excessive heat warning until Sunday night.

For those planning to be outside for area events, such as the Show-Me State Games, the Boone County Fair and farmers markets, finding ways to stay cool might be hard.

The color of clothing, and umbrellas, does matter, as shown through an experiment that ABC 17’s Stormtrack Meteorologist Aaron Morrison created.

White or light-colored clothing reflects the sun and will make the body feel cooler than dark-colored clothing, which absorbs sunlight.

Umbrellas can be used to create shade, but using dark-colored umbrellas will attract the sun more.
