Dangerous heat and storms this weekend
The peak of this week’s heat wave hits Saturday as temperatures reach the highest yet this season. High temperatures will reach 97-100 with heat indices climbing to near 110 in the afternoon. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Saturday evening, storms are expected to develop north of I-70 after 7 PM and track to the southeast overnight. There is a marginal severe storm risk for areas along and north of HWY 50 Saturday evening. Primary threats are damaging wind to 60 mph or quarter size hail. Any storms which do become severe would be isolated and short-lived.
Storms will weaken as they move south of I-70 toward Sunday morning, ending by mid-morning Sunday. Skies will become partly cloudy and high temperatures Sunday afternoon won’t be as hot, reaching near 90 north of I-70 and into the lower 90s south. Heat indices will reach the mid to upper 90s, touching near 100 south of I-70 Sunday afternoon.
Most areas will stay dry Sunday afternoon but isolated storms can’t be ruled out in the Ozarks, ending Sunday evening.
