Columbia homicide numbers for 2017 trending up compared to last year

Columbia Police Department investigators are working on their sixth homicide investigation this year. Six was the yearly total of homicides in 2016. The number of homicides so far this year is just one less than one of the deadliest years, in 2005.

Compared to 2016, homicide numbers in 2017 are on an upward trend. By June 2016, police were on their second homicide investigation.

In 2016, police investigated six homicides; in 2015, police investigated one.

Homicides of 2017

Jamar Hicks, 26, was killed in a triple shooting in east Columbia on Sunday morning.

Quenten Hurt, 25, was killed in a double shooting at the I-70 and Highway 63 connector.

Cameron Scott Caruthers, 28, was killed at a home off Dawn Ridge Road.

Jeffery Jones, 26, was killed after a shooting in northwest Columbia near I-70 Drive NW.

Michael Walker Jr, 32, was killed after a shooting in northwest Columbia near I-70 Drive NW. Walker died at the hospital.

Shamya Nicole Brimmage, 25, was killed on Madison Street.

Violent Crime

From January to June 2017, 370 violent crimes were reported. For the same dates in 2016, 244 violent crimes were reported; in 2015, 274 were reported.

ABC 17 News contacted the Columbia Police Department to get their take on the numbers, and was told the department didn’t have time Monday to speak on the matter.
