Callaway County woman charged with elderly abuse of mother

A woman in Callaway County has been charged with elderly abuse after court documents say her mother was found covered with feces and no food nearby.

Elosia Gabaldon of Jefferson City was charged with a class A misdemeanor of abuse of an elderly person. The charging documents say Gabaldon knowingly acted in a way that resulted in substantial risk to the life, body or health of an elderly person by removing her mother from a nursing home facility, knowing her mother was not capable of caring for herself and then leaving her mother unattended in her house for days without enough food, water, clothing or care.

When a police officer arrived, he said he saw the mother lying in feces and bodily waste. He said there was no water near the bed she was laying in. He wrote the room was unsanitary and smelled strongly of feces.

The officer noted when he walked through the home there were no means of assisted movement like a wheelchair, cane or walker. He did not see a phone near the mother to call emergency services if needed. The woman told police her daughter, Elosia Gabaldon was her caregiver.

According to Senior Services, the woman had fallen in May and fractured her pelvis and was not able to move without help. Senior Services told police the daughter knew about this injury. The mother had told Senior Services her daughter was physically abusive to her.

The mother was also in a nursing home for a time before being removed by the daughter. Staff at the home told police Gabaldon took her mother out of the nursing home on June 2. The staff said they tried to talk to Gabaldon about the mother’s care needs and Gabaldon allegedly said “she did not care.” The staff also told police the daughter was leaving without any of the medications vital to the mother’s heatlh.

The police documents said Gabaldon was not seen at her mother’s home after June 3. Police arrived on June 5.

An arraignment for Gabaldon is scheduled for Friday morning.
