UPDATE: Bernadette Drive closed through Wednesday for buckle repairs
UPDATE: 1:15 pm: Bernadette Drive will be closed through the day while repairs are being done after a buckle happened late Tuesday.
Crews on scene said they needed to put reinforcing bar below the road and then pour concrete on top. The concrete then needs to dry for 24 hours.
The city said the work should be completed Wednesday but some lane restrictions may be in effect.
ORIGINAL STORY: Eastbound Bernadette Drive east of Stadium is closed due to a pavement blow up.
Columbia Public Works street division will begin repairs at 7 a.m. Wednesday. Repairs are expected to be completed by the end of the day on Wednesday.
Tuesday’s heat caused some more pavement buckles in Boone County. MoDOT crews had to shut down one southbound lane of Highway 63 while crews repaired the road with a cold mix type of asphalt.
A pavement blowup is when the pavement expands when water seeps into concrete and the road is heated up. If there are any cracks in the pavement without any room to expand, the two separate pieces will push against each other and push up.
MoDOT Supervisor Rich Skelton told ABC 17 News on scene at Highway 63 that pavement blowups can happen anywhere, at any time.
