Fireworks blamed for Boone County house fire

The Boone County Fire Protection District responds to a house fire late Tuesday night.

It happened around 10:20 p.m. in the 3100 block of Highway 124, just west of Hallsville.

Firefighters said the fire started after fireworks were thrown away in a plastic trash can. The bin was then taken inside the homeowner’s garage, where smoldering fireworks caught the trash can on fire.

According to the department, the fire spread from the trash can to a nearby wall and the home’s attic.

A person who witnessed the fire told the homeowner about it, who put the fire out with a garden hose.

Emergency crews also detected carbon monoxide inside the home and cleared it out with fans. The homeowners were not forced to leave the house due to the toxic gas.

Firefighters believe the fire caused between $2,500 to $3,000 in damage.

No one was hurt in the fire.

The department suggests using water to put out fireworks and to throw them away in a metal trash can.
