51-year-old Centralia man dies after falling off golf cart

A 51-year-year-old Centralia man died Friday night after falling off a golf cart.

It happened just before midnight on Allen Street, just north of Wilson Street in Centralia.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says Sherwen Sanders was riding as a passenger in the golf cart when he fell off the right side and hit his head.

He was transported to University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The crash report does not indicate whether he suffered a medical condition before the accident.

ABC 17 News spoke with residents who said people using golf carts as a regular mode of transportation in Centralia is common.

ABC 17 News looked up the city ordinances regarding golf carts in Centralia. According to city rules, golf carts are allowed to be driven on city streets with a posted speed limit below 35 mph. Most city streets have a 25 mph limit unless otherwise noted.

Centralia city ordinance requires the driver of the golf cart to have a valid license and for the cart to have adequate brakes.

If a golf cart is being driven after sunset or before sunrise, city ordinance requires the cart to have headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals that are operable and properly displayed.
