4th of July reminder: Fireworks illegal within city limits, police say

As the Fourth of July holiday weekend starts, Columbia city employees placed signs across the city to remind residents that fireworks are illegal within the city limits.

The Columbia Police Department posted on its Facebook page Monday a list of fireworks that are illegal within city limits.

According to the city ordinance, sparklers are allowed. The following fireworks are not allowed:

firecrackers bombs (i.e. smoke bombs) torpedoes rockets pinwheels Roman candles fire balloon (floating lantern)

A sergeant with Columbia police said the fireworks in the party packs sold at places such as Walmart are legal. Those usually include pop its, sparklers and poppers.

Fireworks are also prohibited at some city parks located in the county.
