Dispatchers undergo emergency phone call simulation training

As part of their Crisis Intervention Team, or CIT, training on Friday dispatchers learned how to effectively gather information, relay information to fellow law enforcement officers as well as attempt to defuse a situation from over the phone.

After two presentations on negotiation tactics and stress management, participants worked together to defuse a simulated suicidal caller, whose role was played by senior law enforcement officers.

Mike Krohn, a former sergeant at the Boone County Sheriff’s Department and presenter at the training, believes the training effectively improves law enforcement’s functionality. “I think when people call 911, dispatchers are going to be ready and able to help them in a more efficient fashion,” said Krohn.

Speakers emphasized the importance of maintaining contact with callers to assess the situation, attempt to calm the situation, and to build a relationship with the caller.
