Jefferson City’s Habitat for Humanity celebrates 95th completed home
River City Habitat for Humanity of Jefferson City celebrated the completion of its 95th home in Jefferson City on Wednesday.
The completed house was constructed by students at Nichols Career Center with help from the Habitat Tuesday Crew and other community groups and volunteers.
Habitat for Humanity helps low income families become homeowners. After teaching people how to become homeowners, the group sells the home at a no-interest mortgage, making it affordable.
ABC 17 News spoke with the new house’s owner, Monica Smith, who said she was excited about becoming a first-time homeowner.
“Now I don’t have to worry about possibly being evicted out of an apartment building or things not going so well in an apartment building, landlords not doing what they should do,” said Smith. “This is mine so it will be maintained correctly.”
“This Habitat home will be a blessing, not only to the family purchasing it, but also to the community as a whole,” said River City Habitat for Humanity assistant director, Colleen Carl.
Carl also said the family’s interest-free mortgage payments will help fund future Habitat projects.
