USPS releases Forever Eclipse Stamp

The total solar eclipse on Aug. 21 will bring 2 1/2 minutes of midday darkness to Mid-Missouri, but other than that there will be little to remember the rare event; until now.

The Eclipse stamp went on sale Tuesday at the U.S. Postal Service.

It’s the first time the USPS has issued a changing stamp. The image of the eclipse transforms into an image of the moon with the touch of your finger.

The stamp features the photographs of retired astrophysicist Fred Espenak, who’s also known as “Mr. Eclipse.”

He says working on the stamp with the USPS was quite a long process, taking a year to come to fruition.

Now that the Eclipse stamp is a reality, Espenak says he is thrilled about it. “It’s not every day you get to see some of your work on a U.S. postage stamp,” Espenak said.
