First responders on standby at Thursday Night Live with extreme heat

First responders were on standby for Thursday Night Live in downtown Jefferson City with the extreme heat.

But even with the high temperatures and humidity, officials said there were no issues with heat-related illness.

Division Chief Jason Turner with the Jefferson City Fire Department said as the summer continues, it is important to stay hydrated when spending time outdoors.

“Lots of water — if you do consume alcohol, slip a water in there and make sure that you kind of pace yourself, with water, stay in the shade, keep an eye on the little ones make sure the elderly are protected,” Turner said.

The heat index reached 98 degrees in Jefferson City on Thursday, according to the ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team.

The National Weather Service says people should be careful outside when there is a heat index of 91 to 103 degrees. And if there is a even higher heat index, it could be dangerous.

Some signs of heat-related illness include muscle cramping, heavy sweating, weakness and nausea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Jefferson City firefighters and EMS will be present at Thursday Night Live for the remainder of June.

“We’ll have crews up here on the High Street area watching the crowds, making sure that everybody is safe and that they’re enjoying their evening much like we’ve done through the years past as being part of the Thursday Night Live,” Turner said.
