Security breach at Chipotle impacts mid-Missouri locations
A security breach at Chipotle has impacted the stores nationally, including in mid-Missouri.
“The investigation identified the operation of malware designed to access payment card data from cards used on point-of-sale (POS) devices at certain Chipotle restaurants between March 24, 2017 and April 18, 2017. The malware searched for track data (which sometimes has cardholder name in addition to card number, expiration date, and internal verification code) read from the magnetic stripe of a payment card as it was being routed through the POS device. There is no indication that other customer information was affected, said Chipotle in an online statement.
The locations that were impacted in Columbia and Jefferson City are listed below.
Columbia:

The security breach follows a series of food-safety issues in 2015 and 2016. The data stolen includes account numbers and internal verification codes, data that can be potentially used to access debt cards or clone credit cards.
If you believe you’ve been a victim, Chipotle and local banks urge you to call your bank and notify them immediately.
Mary Wilkerson, senior vice president of marketing at Central Bank of Boone County, told ABC 17 News if a customer feels like they have been a victim of fraud to “call immediately, then the bank will identify what fraud was done, including some paperwork,” Wilkerson said. “Typically the bank will issue you a new card and card number, and if it’s serious they might ask you to close your checking account and re-open a new one.”
To not be a victim, Wilkerson said there is one thing you can do, “pay attention to your bank account statements,” she said.
Chipotle said in a online statement, they have removed the malware and are working with cybersecurity firms to see what they can do to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
