Deadly Memorial Day weekend crashes expected down compared to years past

Barring a tragic night on the interstates of Missouri, deadly crashes are set to hit a three-year low in the state for the holiday weekend.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has reported three people have died in crashes on highways this year. That’s down from 13 deaths in 2016, and eight deaths in 2015.

On Monday, the patrol arrested at least 11 people for driving while intoxicated.

Last year, they picked up 135 people on the same holiday weekend on suspicion of DWI.

Sgt. Scott White with the patrol says MoDOT suspending construction work for the weekend has been a huge help in moving traffic.

That construction work will resume Tuesday. It includes major work on the Katy Trail bridge north of Jefferson City on Highway 63.
