Columbia man arrested after threatening law enforcement officer

A Columbia man was arrested on Monday after going to the Columbia Police Department and threatening a law enforcement officer.

John Benton went to the Columbia Police Department and threatening the station master on duty, using profanities and death threats.

More officers came to assist the station master, and Benton walked out of the station. Officers attempted to stop Benton multiple times, while Benton swung at them and continued to resist arrest. Benton was pepper sprayed by officers and eventually taken to UMC for medical and mental health evaluations.

One officer was evaluated for ligament damage in his hand due to the incident with Benton.
