Mid-Missouri car chase ends with drugs bust

A Randolph County man is awaiting formal charges after he was arrested on Interstate 70 in Callaway County.

According the Callaway County Sheriff’s Office, David Leonard, 52, of Mexico, Missouri, was taken into custody near mile marker 142, just west of Kingdom City.

Investigators said it started after a Callaway County deputy spotted a suspicious vehicle traveling on State Road J near I-70 around 1:20 a.m.

When the deputy closed in on the vehicle, it entered eastbound I-70 and reportedly accelerated to over 100 miles per hour.

The deputy said Leonard continued to drive erratically and at a high rate of speed until he suddenly stopped near Kingdom City.

A search of Leonard’s vehicle by deputies resulted in the discovery of controlled substances and drug paraphernalia.

Deputies also said they found methamphetamine in Leonard’s possession.

Leonard is held in the Callaway County Jail on a $8,500 bond for possible charges of felony possession of a controlled substance, felony resisting arrest and several traffic violations.

At last check, Leonard has not been formally charged by Callaway County prosecutors.
