Morel Hunting This Weekend and Next Week
We’ve had enough rainfall since the 1st of March where the ground is damp and morels are starting to pop up. Columbia Regional has picked up 1.44″ this month, and 4.65″ since the first of March. Areas west of US 63 had had higher totals. Sedalia has picked up 1.65″ since April 1st, and 4.95″ since March 1st. Areas north of I-70 such as the Kirksville area and northern Macon county have had closer to 3″. Since the 1st of April. Kirksville is reporting 2.68″ since April 1st, and 6.32″ since March 1st. So it looks like further west you head, your likelihood of seeing morels should increase.
The soil temperature should be consistently above 53 degrees. The ground temperature looks to be near 55-56 across Mid-Missouri leaving perfect conditions for mushroom hunting. Of course you want to always examine the mushroom.
