One child dies in San Bernardino shooting at elementary school

Authorities said one child has died and two adults are dead after a murder-suicide occurred in an elementary school in San Bernardino Monday morning. The shooting happened at North Park Elementary School, located at 5378 North H Street.

Officers were called to the shooting just before 10:30 a.m.

According to police, Special Needs teacher Karen Elaine Smith, 53, was shot and killed by her husband while she was teaching in the classroom, with 15 students in attendance. Her husband, 53-year-old Cedric Anderson of Riverside, turned the gun on himself after shooting and killing his wife.

Two teacher aids were also in the classroom at the time of the shooting, according to police.

Two students were behind Smith when Anderson opened fire. One of the students, 8-year-old Jonathan Martinez died at the hospital after being injured in the shooting. Police said Anderson used a large-caliber revolver.

The second student that was injured in the shooting is in stable condition at the hospital. The student is nine years old, authorities said at a news conference Monday afternoon.

Officers said North Park Elementary School will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Parents were picking their children up at Cajon High School after North Park was evacuated Monday.

The school went on lockdown Monday morning while the threat was contained. Schools in the area were placed on precautionary lockdown as well and authorities said students were taken to Cajon High School for safety where they were released to their parents.
