Fatal head-on collision in Moniteau County
A Syracuse, Missouri man was killed in a two-car crash on Highway 5 in Moniteau County Friday afternoon.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Manix Schmidt, 29, was driving southbound in the northbound lanes trying to pass a car. Schmidt approached another car traveling in the northbound lane when both drivers swerved the same way to try to avoid hitting each other and hit head on.
Schmidt was pronounced dead at the scene. According the crash report, he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The driver of the second car, Michael Claas, of Tipton, was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.
