Preparedness is key in severe storms

With heavy rains expected this week and the potential for strong storms Tuesday evening, Mid-Missourians are once again being reminded of the importance of being prepared in an emergency. The motto “Be Prepared”, is usually associated with the Boy Scouts of America, but each and every person should enforce that motto in their everyday life. One of the ways to consistently be prepared is by having an emergency supply kit and a severe weather preparedness plan. It’s often overlooked, but prior to any storms, it’s always important to talk with your children and family about what to do in case of severe weather and where to go. It’s also important to talk about the importance of an emergency supply kit and what should be in them. FEMA list on their website, at least 30 items you should keep in your emergency kit, but if you are wondering what the least amount of items you should have are, we’ve narrowed it down. – To begin, your kit should always have one gallon of water per person, per day. – A first aid kit, in case you or your family members get injured. – A flashlight with extra batteries in case of a power outage. – A whistle to signal for help, in case of a devastating tornado. – Non-perishable food for every family member. – Some communication device to stay up to date with weather information. There are a variety of other items you should include in your kit, but these are the most important. As for where to store it, it should always be in the place that you seek shelter during severe weather. Doing these things and others will always ensure that you and your family stay prepared during the worst severe weather.
