Much needed rainfall expected through the weekend

Thanks to earlier showers, our atmosphere has stabilized in Mid-Missouri. This has led to little to no threat of severe weather and this pattern will continue to persist through the evening hours.

While that is the case, Mid-Missouri is still seeing some much needed rainfall. For the better part of the late afternoon into tonight, rain has been falling across Mid-Missouri. Most of the activity has been confined to areas along and west of the Hwy 63 corridor, but by nights end all of Mid-Missouri will get in on the action.

Most of the activity is beginning to die down as we lose the primary forcing from the lower level jet. This jet has been bringing in plenty of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, but as it dies down we are losing our moisture supply. We aren’t done with the rain yet though. The low pressure system itself is still in Oklahoma and will bring us more rain before the end of the weekend.

So far most locations west of Highway 63 have seen anywhere from two tenths of an inch to just over an inch, with localized heavier amounts.

As we head into the evening hours, the shower activity will begin to taper off, with a lull by morning. As the low pressure system draws closer to Mid-Missouri through the day tomorrow, we’ll see on and off rain through most of the day. A few thunderstorms can’t be ruled out, but they will remain below severe criteria.

Keep the umbrellas hand this weekend, mainly for Saturday, as this rain sticks around. Thankfully, when all is said and done Saturday night, most locations will see anywhere from an inch to two inches, with locally heavier amounts.

This rain is good for all of us, as it will practically eliminate the drought as we head into next week, with more rain expected. By Friday of next week, most locations could be seeing 4+” of rain when all is said and done.
