One dead after Madison Street shooting in Columbia, now considered a homicide
UPDATE 3/22: One of the victims in the shooting has died from her wounds, turning the shooting into a homicide.
The victim has been identified at Shamya Nicole Brimmage, 25 of Columbia. Brimmage was pronounced dead last night at the hospital. She is the victim of Columbia’s first homicide of 2017.
Brimmage was celebrating her 25th birthday Tuesday when she was shot and killed. A former manager of hers at Loop Liquor said she was a friendly employee, working her way through hard times when she started about two years ago.
Brimmage leaves behind two children. Family members set up an online message board for people to leave condolences. Church leaders in central Columbia say they are working to hold a vigil Thursday at 6 p.m. at the corner of Madison Street and Forest Avenue.
UPDATE: ABC 17 News confirmed two people were shot Tuesday evening in the 1000 block of Madison Street in Columbia.
According to police, the two victims are women in their early 20’s. One of them has suffered life-threatening injuries. The other woman’s injuries remain unknown.
The preliminary investigation showed a suspect or suspects shot through a home’s walls, hitting the women.
A resident in the area told ABC 17 News she heard multiple gunshots just after 10 p.m. She wasn’t alone. Police said Boone County Joint Communications received multiple calls of shots heard starting around 10:10 p.m.
The calls came a little more than four hours after police had previously responded to the same location for shots heard. In that incident, officers found shell casings, as well as a home hit with gunfire in the 500 block of Jackson Street. No injuries were reported from that incident.
“All preliminary information would suggest that these two incidents may be related, however, this is subject to change pending further investigation,” said public information officer Bryana Larimer.
