Tornadoes, strong winds hit Missouri

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, multiple areas will be assessed Tuesday after tornadoes and strong winds moved through parts of Kansas and Missouri Monday night.

In a Facebook post, the service wrote: “We will be deploying assessment teams on Tuesday to survey tornado damage in Olathe, Leawood, Grandview, Lee’s Summit, Oak Grove, Odessa, Smithville, Trimble, Lathrop and Richmond, Carrollton. We may also survey damage near Mt Moriah, Mercer and near Ballard. EF scale ratings will be assigned to these tornadoes tomorrow afternoon and/or Wednesday.”

On Monday, multiple homes were damaged in Oak Grove, a town 30 minutes east of Kansas City. According to the Oak Grove Police Department, much of the damage happened on the south side of the town.

The department said, “We urge all citizens to avoid the area of 20th Street South for their safety from debris and down power lines. Use caution across town for debris, down lines and other hazards. We also understand citizens want to help, but at this time leave the work to First Responders.”

Further east, ABC 17 News was in Pettis County late Monday night and saw several trees uprooted and a camper flipped over.

Parts of Columbia faced power outages and downed power lines from Monday evening through the morning Tuesday. At 2 a.m., less than 100 customers were still without power.

Much of mid-Missouri faced strong winds and hail. An ABC 17 News viewer in the Prathersville area said the wind was so strong, it made a roaring sound.
