UPDATE: One dead in Columbia crash

Columbia police confirm one person has died after a car crash on Old Highway 63 on Saturday afternoon.

Police said the crash happened when the first car was leaving a private drive in the 1000 block of the highway. The second car was going north. The first car started making a left turn to head south and failed to yield to the second car causing the crash.

The first driver was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The second driver was taken to the hospital with moderate but not life threatening injuries.

Both drivers were wearing their seatbelt. Police are investigating if alcohol or drugs played any factor.

This would be Columbia’s first fatal crash of 2017.
