February 2017 on track to be least snowiest

Mid-Missourians have been spoiled this month, at least as far as temperatures are concerned. Outside of a few cold days, this month has seen an abundance of spring-like weather. That’s what is to be expected this weekend, as the thermometer once again eclipses the 70-degree mark. It’s a going trend, that could leave February 2017 as the least snowiest February dating back to the late 1800s.

So far, no snow has accumulated across Columbia this month, despite the few flurries we have seen. It’s not unheard of for this to happen so far in February, as February 2013 was considered a dry month, until the second half of the month when over 20 inches of snow fell.

February is known for it’s wide swing in month snowfall totals, as just last year only 2 inches of snow fell during the entire month of February. If this trend holds through the rest of the month, it would not only rank as the least snowiest February on record, but it would join the ranks of nine other years when just a trace fell, the most recent being 2009.

The question now that begs to be answered is will there be snow this month. It’s entirely too early to tell, but signs are pointing to a cold snap towards the end of the month, and if moisture is present we could see snow. For now, we not only are on track for the least amount of snowfall in February, but the least amount in a season ever, with only 1.5 inches since the season began.
