Sex offender arrested for threatening woman with gun in Douglass Park

Columbia police officers were dispatched to a threat with a weapon in Douglass Park, 400 N. Providence Road, at 1:07 p.m. on Thursday.

The caller stated that a black male with a burn on his neck threatened a female in the park with a black gun. The caller said that the male left the scene in a beige Cadillac.

Community Outreach Officers (COU) were in Douglass Park when the call was dispatched and saw a black male in a beige Cadillac leaving the park. COU Officers performed a traffic stop on the vehicle at Fifth Street and Rogers Street.

The driver was Michael McVay. The officers performed a frisk of the driver and his immediate area and said that they found separately packaged baggies of marijuana in the center console and a black handgun in the passenger glove compartment.

Joint Communications also informed officers that McVay was a convicted sex offender. McVay was arrested for being within 500 feet of a school, unlawful distribution of a controlled substance felony and possession or sale of certain weapons that are prohibited.
