Howard County Prosecuting Attorney resigns

UPDATE: Murrell issued a release Thursday regarding his resignation. In his resignation letter to Gov. Eric Greitens he cited the inability to ethically perform the job on a ‘part-time’ basis. He also stated that he could no longer financially continue as a part-time prosecutor. His last day as Prosecuting Attorney for Howard County will be Friday, February 17.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Howard County Prosecuting Attorney has resigned, ABC 17 has learned.

Stephen Murrell, who practices law at the Daily and Murrell Law Office in Glasgow, and was sworn in as Howard County’s prosecutor in December 2014.

According to a Howard County employee, Murrell’s resignation was effective Monday. The employee did not know the reason for the resignation.

Gov. Eric Greitens will appoint a replacement to fulfill Murrell’s current term. It is not known when the appointment will be made.
