19-year-old hospitalized, arrested after early-morning crash on Rock Quarry Road
UPDATE: A driver on the way home from work early Friday morning saw the crash and helped the injured driver.
Adam Babb, head of security for Roxy’s nightclub, said that he saw the driver was seriously injured. He said he grabbed his Army medical bag from his car and started treating the driver as much as he could.
Babb said he could tell the driver was drunk.
Babb said after first responders arrived, he still helped treat the driver until the responders got the driver free from the truck.
UPDATE 9:17 a.m.: Columbia police officers confirmed to ABC17 News the driver of the truck was 19-year-old Lucas Kolisch.
When officers arrived at the scene, they noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming off Kolisch. They also saw a fake ID in his wallet.
Kolicsch was arrested at 3:29 a.m. on suspicion of careless and imprudent driving, driving while intoxicated, false identification and purchase and/or possession by a minor.
UPDATE 3:55 a.m.: A sergeant with the Columbia Police Department told ABC 17 News the driver involved in the crash on Rock Quarry Road hit a tree.
He said only one vehicle was involved. Police said the wreck was a class one trauma, which is apparently the most serious category.
Officers told ABC 17 News someone had to be cut out of the vehicle and went to University Hospital with serious injuries.
They said the driver apparently went off the road, hit a tree and then became suspended after hitting another tree. Police said the original tree that was hit had been in the roadway.
Our ABC 17 News crews said there is visible damage to trees near the scene of the crash, and dirt on the road.
Police have now reopened Rock Quarry Road to traffic.
ORIGINAL: Right now, at least seven emergency units are on the scene of a crash in central Columbia.
Emergency responders were first called out to Rock Quarry Road near the Hinkson Creek Bridge just before 2:00 a.m. Friday.
The Boone County Emergency Management Agency sent out an alert about the crash around 2:15 a.m., asking drivers to avoid the area.
ABC 17 News heard reports that crews had to cut someone out of a vehicle that was involved and heard a driver was possibly injured.
Police at the scene told our crews it was a “pretty bad crash” and said at least one person went to the hospital.
Right now, police have shut down part of Rock Quarry Road as they investigate and work to clear the wreck.
