UPDATE: Police say cellphone sale spurs shooting in north Columbia

UPDATE, 9:22 p.m.: The Columbia Police Department said a shooting Monday night in north Columbia stemmed from a cellphone sale.

Public information officer Bryana Larimer said two men met in the 1500 block of Riva Ridge Court to sell the phone. The potential buyer took the phone and ran, which caused the seller, armed with a handgun, to shoot at him. A bullet struck him in the leg, Larimer wrote in a news release.

Officers and a Boone County Sheriff’s Department K-9 could not find the victim on scene, who Larimer said ran into the woods after being shot. A local hospital eventually notified Joint Communications that he made it there, but Larimer did not say how he got there.

“Arrest(s) are pending as the investigation is ongoing,” Larimer wrote.

Police learned about the gunshot victim from a local hospital. Officers at the scene on Rive Ridge Court said another sergeant was at the hospital to investigate.

Law enforcement on scene said the suspected shooter, a male, was one of the people that called 9-1-1 in reference to the shooting. As of 7 p.m., officers were still trying to learn the motive of the shooting, or if it was accidental.

It is the third shooting in Columbia in the last 48 hours. Officers are still searching for those responsible for multiple gunshots fired at College Avenue and Business Loop 70 Sunday morning. Police also found a car with bloodstains and its window shot out near Rock Quarry Park Monday morning.
