Local events held for MLK Day

Mid-Missouri is celebrating Martin Luther King Day with a peace march and a candlelight walk.

Columbia Parks and Recreation will hold the 45th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Candlelight Walk and Memorial Celebration at the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church at 6:30 p.m. Stephens College is holding a Peace March at 3 p.m. at Historic Senior Hall, which will end at Windsor Auditorium for a program at 4 p.m. The program includes a short film, “Sugar-Coated: Make America Great Again,” by Tracy Wilson-Kleecamp as well as a dance choreographed and performed by students titled “Freedom.” There will be spoken word by a student group known as Poets of Infinity and a soliloquy performed by Sicily Mathenia. This year’s program is dedicated to Monica Hand, an English assistant professor who passed away in December.
