Car stolen in Pizza Hut parking lot as it was warming up

A vehicle stolen from the parking lot of the Pizza Hut late Friday evening may not make it back to its owners.

It happened on Worley Street as a worker getting off shift warmed up his car in preparation to leave for the night.

The victim’s fiance, who shares the vehicle, says he walked out, started the car, and went back inside. When he returned to get in the car and leave, it was gone.

Police responded to the incident, but reportedly stated the outlook wasn’t hopeful.

His fiance said the theft happened in a matter of minutes, and urges other Columbia residents to remember that something like this can happen, even in the icy conditions the city faces this weekend.

ABC 17 News has reported on this issue throughout the cold season, as several cars have already been stolen this winter in Columbia.

The Columbia Police Department recommends that drivers never leave their keys in the ignition or their car running without being in or near the vehicle, even if for a few minutes. They also recommend keeping your car locked with the windows rolled up and no valuables in sight. Parking in public, well-lit areas is also a good idea.
