Police find shell casings after shots fired on Garth Avenue

Police are investigating a shots-fired incident that happened Sunday night around 9 p.m. on Garth Avenue.

Police said Monday officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Garth Avenue, by Oak Towers. That is also the intersection of Garth and Sexton Road.

Officers located several shell casings in the area. Columbia police spokesperson Briana Larimer said Monday she does not have further information, but ABC17 News will check back in later Monday afternoon.

There were two shootings in the area in the past few months. ABC17 News reported two separate shootings on Oct. 13 and 14.

On Oct. 13, officers responded to the 100 block of Sexton Road at about 8 p.m. after residents heard gunfire. Officers found a house that had been hit several times by gunfire. There was someone inside the home at the time, but they weren’t hit.

On Oct. 14, officers responded again to the area at about 2 a.m., and a victim with a gunshot wound turned up at the Police Department.

Officers at the Police Department checked the victim’s car and found multiple bullet holes in the passenger side. There were four people in the car, but only one other person hit. She had minor injuries.

After further investigation, police said the car had been traveling south on Garth Avenue towards Sexton Road when multiple shots hit the car. One of the occupants noticed a man holding a gun just north of Garth and Sexton before the shooting began. Police found a shell casing north of a home in the 100 block of Sexton Road.

ABC17 News will talk to residents Monday to find out if they think the shootings are related.
