Below 0 Wind Chill Expected on Friday

On Thursday night clouds will be clearing from north to south in the overnight hours. The wind chill by 10PM-12AM will start to fall below 0. Dangerous air temperatures will fall in the single digits overnight close to 5 in Columbia. Factoring in a northwest wind of 5-10 mph, the wind chill by Friday morning will be near -3 to -7 for central Mid-Missouri. Areas north of I-70 could see wind chill readings as low as 10 below 0. Where the air may be a bit more stagnant in lower elevations near Hermann and the Lake of the Ozarks, the wind chill may be near 0.

Frostbite can occur within 30 minutes of expose skin when the wind chill is at -15 or colder. The precursor to frostbite is frostnip. While we are not forecasting a wind chill of -15, tingling, redness, and numbness are some of the signs of frostnip. Dress in layers, and make sure skin isn’t exposed during these cold wind chills.
