Trash pile causes New Year’s Eve fire in Sunrise Beach

The Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District believes a trash pile is to blame for a New Year’s Eve fire.

The fire happened Saturday just after 5:45 p.m. on Deep Water Drive.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they saw a two-story garage on fire. As they began to release hose lines for use, the fire spread to a house.

According to Chief Dennis P. Reilly, the fire was extinguished with the help of units from Mid County, Gravois, and Northwest Fire Protection Districts.

The Fire District said the fire likely first spread to the garage from a trash pile.

No injuries were reported.

“With our community’s support we have been able to increase the on – duty staffing of the Fire District,” said Chief Reilly. “At this incident, we were able to put 5 firefighters on the scene with almost 4000 gallons of water in a very short time span. There is no doubt that this increased staffing along with the aggressive actions taken by our members allowed us to contain the fire to the extent that we did.”
